Leader of Learning - Mathematics - Mrs Melissa Hurn

The Mathematics curriculum enhances students’ numeracy knowledge and skills by engaging them in activities which promote mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. These essential capabilities allow them to make informed decisions and solve problems related to their everyday lives.

To support their learning in Mathematics, students at St Joseph’s are encouraged to prepare a summary of each topic, which allows teacher feedback prior to undertaking upcoming assessments. Years 7 to 9 students use these summaries during assessments while students in Years 10 to 12 are supplied with a formula sheet constructed to reflect what they will receive in HSC examinations. Students learning is further consolidated by completing Formative Assessment tasks for each topic. This builds their confidence in the lead up to Summative Assessment tasks and identifies areas where they need to pay particular attention. Formative Assessment tasks may be a practise test, mini assignment, quizzes or challenge activities.

Students who achieve at a high level in Mathematics are strongly encouraged to participate in the annual Australasian Mathematics Competition. St Joseph’s students regularly receive credits, distinctions and high distinctions in this competition. Year 8 students also attend the Inquisitive Minds Roadshow each year, which offers a ‘hands-on’ style of competition for students with a variety of challenging activities tailored to their ability level.
